Lot Summary

The technology included in this portfolio discloses techniques for the mobile collection and integration of multiple types of data all in one mobile device. The connection of data photo records to social media tools can facilitate decision making and aid in marketing targets, trends, and conditions. One of the applications of this technology is condition reporting such as in building inspections, where data-photo collection is an improvement to existing methods of camera and clipboard or using independent software and devices. Typically, a data collector or inspector reviewing premises for building and safety code compliance manually collects data which is then later manually inserted into an inspection report. Conventionally, a handheld portable device is used to gather some data, maybe a clipboard is used and a camera is used for photos. Conventional handheld devices, systems, and methods do not collect and integrate multiple types of data. Therefore, an improved handheld device is needed that collects, integrates, and manipulates multiple types of data and increases demand and value as more and more information is tied to social media.

Value Proposition: This patent portfolio discloses techniques for collecting and integrating multiple types of data using a handheld or mobile device. The data can be of various forms including text, images, digital photographs, digital video, barcodes, audio, GPS, GIS etc. The handheld device includes a data collection template that provides a user interface for collecting the data. The template includes consecutive questions, data collection prompts, and commands for guiding a user through data collection activities. Thereafter, a permanent standard or customized record is generated from this collected data. Further, the handheld device includes software that allows switching between data collection templates and digital camera functions. This allows inspection of a digital photograph into a record at the time of capture. The software in the devices also allows overlaying of an electronic sketch over the digital photograph at the time of capture. Moreover, the device can be used in parallel or in series with other handheld devices and the collected data from all the devices can be synchronized and used to optimize both the data collection template and the production of reports. The disclosed system for data collection can be used for any purpose where data and photo capture is required. Simple examples include building inspections, fire inspections, management applications, and inventory tracking using social media information right from the shop floor.
